Update: Marcus Murphy returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, his seventh career return for a touchdown and his third of this season.

Marcus Murphy ran the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, breaking a tie with Jeremy Maclin for career kick and punt returns for a touchdown.

Murphy now has six career touchdown returns on special teams. Maclin, now a standout for the Philadelphia Eagles, had five return TDs at Mizzou.

The 5-foot-9 all-purpose threat returned a kickoff 100 yards against South Dakota State in the season opener. He also returned four kicks or punts for touchdowns in 2012: a kickoff against Alabama, two punts against Southeast Louisiana and a punt against UCF.

The NCAA’s active leader in career return yards with 2,512 yards is within striking distance of Maclin’s career school record of 2,626.

The touchdown also is a huge help for a Missouri team that hasn’t converted a third down since Sept. 27 against South Carolina.
