Tua Tagovailoa is one of the best quarterbacks in the country this season. He’s also one of the greatest quarterbacks in Alabama history. And when his career is over, he’ll likely hold some Crimson Tide records.

He got closer to breaking one on Saturday.

Tagovailoa threw touchdown passes on each of his first four drives against Southern Miss to give the Crimson Tide a commanding early 28-0 lead at home. With those four scores, he became only the second Alabama quarterback to throw 70 career touchdown passes.

The only other former Tide quarterback to reach that milestone was AJ McCarron, who threw 77 touchdown passes while playing at Alabama from 2010-13.

Tagovailoa will likely break McCarron’s record, and he’ll do it in one fewer season. Last year, he threw 43 touchdowns, which was 13 more than McCarron ever threw in a single season.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Tagovailoa also became the first Alabama quarterback to throw four touchdown passes in consecutive games on Saturday. He also had four touchdown passes in last week’s win over South Carolina.

Tagovailoa won’t break McCarron’s single-season record on Saturday, as he’ll likely be out of the game before he could throw seven more touchdowns. But it will be a milestone to watch over the Crimson Tide’s next few games.
