If this keeps up, Auburn may hold student tryouts in attempt to find some running backs.

Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn announced Sunday that incoming freshman running back Stephen Davis Jr. will be forced to sit out the season in order to rehab an injury suffered during his senior season of high school.

According to Malzahn, Auburn allowed Davis to practice on a limited basis to open fall camp. However, Davis has failed to fully recovery from the injury and will be forced to redshirt the 2016 season.

Earlier this week, the Tigers dismissed senior running back Javon Robinson from the team. That move follows the transfer of running back Roc Thomas in May and 2015’s leading rusher Peyton Barber leaving  school early and declaring for the 2016 NFL Draft.  Unfortunately for Barber, he went undrafted following seven rounds of selections – although he was signed by Tampa Bay as a free agent.

Heading into the season, Auburn has only one running back on the roster that carried the ball for the Tigers last season in sophomore Kerryon Johnson. Johnson had 52 carries in 2015. According to Auburn’s official roster, following Davis’ injury, the Tigers are down to four healthy scholarship running backs.
