Atkins was notably missing from Thursday’s practice, and this answers the question.
The 6-foot-4, 315-pound player is one of the better players along the defensive line that faces some uncertainly. Chauncey Rivers was dismissed and Jonathan Ledbetter isn’t on the 105-man roster because he’s receiving treatment for two alcohol-related arrests. Julian Rochester’s status is also unclear for the opener as he faces felony charges for an incident with a BB gun at his dorm.
Atkins recorded 12 tackles, including one for a loss, last year.
