LSU coach Les Miles was more revealing that usual about his team’s quarterback situation during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference.

After expressing his desire to keep the quarterback competition “in house” and let the week play out, Miles said he “can’t imagine Danny Etling would not take the first snap” when the No. 20 Tigers host Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Saturday. The coach said Etling’s week of preparation and his team’s early performance against Jacksonville State last Saturday prompted him to insert Etling for starter Brandon Harris.

Etling’s numbers didn’t exactly wow (6-of-14 for 100 yards, a touchdown and an interception), but he sparked LSU to three straight scoring drives after a sluggish first quarter. But Miles maintained Harris still needs to be ready to play because “his role allows him to  compete to start.”

Miles also said he expects junior running back Leonard Fournette will play Saturday after he sat out the Jacksonville State game nursing an ankle injury.

“We want to wait until he is 100 percent, and he’s closing in on that now,” the coach said.
