Former Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott could start opener for Dallas Cowboys

Former Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft, has been impressive this preseason.
The ex-Bulldog has opened the preseason on a tear, completing 22 of 27 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also ran for two touchdowns and hasn’t thrown an interception.
Now, thanks to an unfortunate injury to starter Tony Romo, Prescott could get the opening day start for the Cowboys:

Prescott’s NFL debut might not be over after just one week, either. It sounds like Romo will miss some significant time recovering from the injury:
My understanding is that best-case scenario is that #Cowboys QB Tony Romo returns by mid-season. He broke a different bone than last time.

Recent history would suggest the Cowboys are in trouble without Romo:
The Cowboys are 1-13 the last 5 years without Tony Romo.

However, the Cowboys haven’t had Prescott as their backup in those previous 14 games.
Dallas opens the regular season at home on Sunday, Sept. 11, against NFC East rival New York Giants.
