As a “Roll Tide” was called out from the audience, garnering laughs from around the room, a very nervous and quiet Tide RB Derrick Henry stepped up to the podium to accept his award and thank his family, friends and mentors for their very specific contributions to his life and football career so far.
Henry joined the elite tonight, winning the Heisman Trophy almost unanimously, according to region. Five of the six regions voted Henry as the Heisman winner, while the sixth voted him as the runner-up.
But this was the twentieth closest race in the modern era of the Heisman, with less than 300 individual points separating Henry from the runner-up Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey.
Here are the voting results:
- Derrick Henry, Alabama, RB – 1,832 points
- Christian McCaffrey, Stanford, RB – 1,539 point
- Deshaun Watson, Clemson, QB – 1,165 points
- Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma, QB – 334 points
- Keenan Reynolds, Navy, QB -180 points
With the win, Henry became one of only 12 SEC players to claim the Heisman, and he is just the second ever Alabama player to be named the Heisman. Mark Ingram was the first Tide Heisman in 2009.
Henry is also the first junior running back to take home the trophy since Colorado RB Rashaan Salaam won it in 1994.
Here’s some Henry and some of the people closest to him had to say about the star running back tonight:
Derrick Henry: "If you have dreams, go chase them. God will be there every step of the way. I'm a living testament." #Heisman
