Steve Spurrier will be the first to tell you that winning starts with players and he’s had plenty over an illustrious 25-year college head coaching career that began at Duke in 1987.
This week, when offensive lineman A.J. Cann becomes the Gamecocks’ first player selected, he’ll be draft pick No. 101 for the Head Ball Coach, the most among active coaches and the SEC’s all-time leader.
Since taking over at South Carolina in 2005, Spurrier has helped 31 players reach the next level, most recently pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney who became the Gamecocks’ second No. 1 overall selection in program history last season.
Most of Spurrier’s draft picks came during a championship-filled 12-year stint at Florida where the man with the visor led 65 future draft picks to a grand total of six SEC titles (and a national championship in 1996).
At Duke, Spurrier won the 1989 ACC Championship, but only three players from that team — quarterback Anthony Dilweg, pass-catcher Clarkston Hines and guard Chris Port — were drafted. Spurrier’s first draft pick as a head coach was signal caller Steve Slayden in 1989.
