Tennessee State football player Christion Abercrombie has faced a long road to recovery since he suffered a head injury against Vanderbilt on Sept. 29, but late Sunday, his mother offered an optimistic update.

The sophomore linebacker had emergency surgery at Vanderbilt Medical Center shortly after the incident on the field when he collapsed, and was listed in critical condition. He’s since moved to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, near where he grew up, to a facility that specializes in brain and spinal cord rehabilitation.

At a news conference last week, his mother, Staci Abercrombie, said, “He’s still fighting. We still have our faith and believe in God that he’ll continue to heal.”

On Sunday night, she said her son is able to wave his hand, mumble names and he also gave a hug. His dad asked him if he could talk, and Christion whispered, “Yes!”

The mother said what many agree with as they’ve watched this journey unfold.

“Blessings on blessings,” she tweeted.
