Alabama is looking to recover from narrowly missing the College Football Playoff in its first season under Kalen DeBoer. However, one starter on the defensive side of the ball is reportedly hitting the transfer portal.

According to Pete Nakos with On3 Sports, defensive back DeVonta Smith has entered his name into the portal. Smith was a starter this season for Alabama and a former member of the 2021 recruiting class.

Coming out of high school, Smith was a 4-star prospect and the 19th cornerback in the country per the 247 Sports Composite. After seeing limited time in his first 3 seasons in the program, Smith carved out a key role in 2024.

Smith registered 30 total tackles and was 3rd on the team with 5 pass breakups to go with a forced fumble. Smith joins Jahlil Hurley as Alabama DBs to hit the portal in this cycle, and it brings the total number of Crimson Tide players in the portal so far to 13 players. The offensive side of the ball has particularly been hit with 8 players in the portal, including 4 pass-catchers (3 receivers and 1 tight end).

These kinds of moves are not unprecedented, especially following the first year of a new head coach. Still, it will be noteworthy to see how DeBoer and his staff respond and regroup heading into 2025.
