Dabo Swinney may be the second best coach in college football behind only Nick Saban. Of course, Urban Meyer may have something to say about that.
It’s been incredible to watch his rise at Clemson from being an assistant coach to now one of the best coaches in college football history.
But that foundation was laid long ago when he played for Alabama under Gene Stallings. He didn’t put up many numbers during his career, but his experience still carries over to today.
This week at ACC Media Days, Swinney was asked about the biggest lesson he took away from Coach Stallings, and his answer had nothing to do with actual on-field coaching.

Many former college players won’t get into coaching because it dominates their lives. They’re either on the road recruiting, at the facility coaching or meeting with their staff. Yes, the money is incredible, but that’s still not enough for some to be away from their families.
Just look at Urban Meyer, who took a year away from football to “spend time with his family” and get healthy. Knowing what Meyer went through at Florida makes everyone appreciate coaches like Saban and Swinney more. They have found a magical balance between ball and family.
