Grant Nelson, a North Dakota State center transfer who has been expected to transfer to Alabama for a few weeks, made it official Wednesday evening. He will play for Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide next season.

That’s massive news for a Crimson Tide squad that has lost a lot heading into next season. Gone are the days of Brandon Miller, Noah Clowney, Charles Bediako, Jahvon Quinerly and so on. But Nelson’s addition will keep the Tide formidable heading into the new season.

Last year with NDSU, the nearly 7-footer averaged just under 18 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. He brings much-needed experience and will be a Day 1 starter for Alabama.

The Tide only returns 1 starter from last season’s impressive unit: Mark Sears. Quinerly had originally stated his intentions to stay for another season but entered the portal last week.

Despite insane turnover, a pretty solid group is emerging. Hofstra transfer Aaron Estrada should take over point guard duties in Quinerly’s absence, getting back to his prime position after playing in more of a wing role for the Pride last season. His addition alongside Nelson makes for as dangerous a transfer duo as there is in the nation this upcoming season.
