One day after he was traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Washington Redskins, S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix explained that he would change his number because of his love and respect for Sean Taylor.
Clinton-Dix has worn No. 21 throughout his career, but that’s also the number Taylor, a safety for the Redskins wore in his career as a Pro Bowl safety before he died at age 24. He was shot at his Florida home in 2007. Clinton-Dix announced that he would wear No. 20 with Washington.
“Check this out, all right? I’ve got practice in about an hour. I came here to play. I came here to work,” Clinton-Dix said at a news conference, according to the Associated Press. “If that’s on special teams or just helping contribute to this team any way I can, then No. 20 is going to be suited up this weekend. And you can bet that.”
Clinton-Dix was picked in the first round in 2014 and is tied for second in the league with three interceptions this season. The former Alabama safety said Taylor was a leader by example, and played for the love of the game, not just for money.
“He set great examples,” Clinton-Dix said. “So that’s someone you want to admire. Somebody you want to look up to. And someone you want to feed off of. There’s no way I can be Sean Taylor, but he’s a guy I look up to, and I model my game after him.”
