Kalen DeBoer matches Nick Saban-era record with another loss as a 2-score favorite

Kalen DeBoer had matched an unfortunate mark from the Nick Saban era, as Alabama came up empty-handed against Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl for the coach’s 3rd Crimson Tide loss as a 2-score favorite. That’s obviously not a pretty one to replicate and did not make the best impression as the Crimson Tide fell 19-13 to the Wolverines on Tuesday.

Things of this nature are not prevalent among teams like the ones Saban has coached, and there is no question that this does not happen often when it comes to teams like Alabama. Especially Alabama teams going up against teams in the postseason like Michigan that have not fully bounced back anywhere near as expected after winning a national title game.

After the game, Brandon Marcello took to X (formerly known as Twitter), detailing the numbers for games when Alabama was favored by 14 points or more. Saban held an overall record of 135-3 in those situations, while DeBoer has been 6-3 in those exact same situations. It will be interesting to see how this continues to shake out, but it should also not be taken lightly that this is DeBoer’s first season there as the team has gone through a time of major transition.

After missing the College Football Playoff, Alabama will look to get back on the right track next season.
