Tosh Lupoi, who has coached in college and the NFL, is set to return to college as Dan Lanning is reportedly hiring him as the new Oregon defensive coordinator.
The news was reported by Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports, who said Lupoi would join the Ducks after the Jaguars’ season.
Lupoi, who played at Cal from 2001-05, has been Jacksonville’s defensive line coach this season, and he spent the 2020 season as the Atlanta Falcons defensive line/run game coordinator after stops in Cleveland and at Alabama, according to his Jaguars bio.
As Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Alabama led the nation in scoring defense in 2016 (13.0 ppg) and 2017 (11.9). The school also finished second in the nation in total defense in 2016 (260.4 ypg) and 2017 (261.8 ypg). Lupoi worked with several players who went on to be first-round picks in the NFL, including DE Jonathan Allen, LB Rueben Foster, S Minkah Fitzpatrick, NT Daron Payne and LB Rashaan Evans.
Lupoi’s career before Alabama included a stint as the defensive run game coordinator and defensive line coach at Washington from 2012-13 and served as the defensive line coach at California from 2008-11.
