Maybe the third position will be the charm.

Former Auburn QB John Franklin III has signed an NFL deal, but he won’t be a signal-caller. According to SB Nation’s Alex Kirshner, Franklin has signed a rookie deal with the Chicago Bears as a defensive back and kick returner. Switching things up is nothing new for Franklin.

He started his career as a quarterback at FSU before transferring to East Mississippi Community College and appearing on the popular Netflix series “Last Chance U.” After his time EMCC, Franklin landed at Auburn. He arrived as a quarterback, but had moved to wide receiver in the spring before transferring to FAU. He stuck with the wide receiver position at FAU, but apparently his NFL opportunity is on the other side of the ball.

At AU, Franklin was 14-of-26 for 204 yards and a touchdown as a passer. He also rushed for 450 yards and two touchdowns. In his season at FAU, he appeared in 13 games, recording seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.
