Gene Stallings coached at the University of Alabama for seven seasons from 1990-1996 and led the Tide to an undefeated season and national championship in 1992. He amassed an impressive 70-16-1 record in Tuscaloosa and went 5-1 in six bowl games during that time. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
Stallings’ teams won the SEC West division three years in a row from 1992-1994 and once more in 1996, although it went just 1-3 in SEC championship games with the lone win coming in 1992. Following the 1993 season an NCAA investigation found Alabama had falsified the eligibility of one of its starting cornerbacks and was subsequently forced to forfeit eight wins and a tie from that season. The forfeits docked the Tide’s record from 9-3-1 to 1-12 for the year, and docked Stallings’ record at Alabama to 62-25.
