Tosh Lupoi is the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the University of Alabama. He was promoted after being the team’s outside linebackers coach for the 2016 season.
Lupoi is known for being an elite recruiter, and now, he’s learning how to coordinate a defense under one of the best defensive minds in football history in Nick Saban and former defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Pruitt left to become Tennessee’s head coach following the 2017 national championship season.
Lupoi was a defensive lineman for Cal from 2000-2005 and led the position group in tackles in 2003. He then returned to his alma-mater in 2008 as the youngest full-time assistant coach in the program’s history, coaching the team’s defensive line. While at Cal, he started being known for his recruiting prowess and his development of players within his position group.
Following his stint at Cal, Lupoi went to Washington to coach the defensive line. Lupoi coached Danny Shelton at Washington, and Shelton went on to become the 12th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns.
Lupoi joined Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide staff in 2014 as a defensive analyst.
