North Carolina did not have much of an answer for West Virginia’s Derek Clark throughout the game. Then, Clark ran out of steam in the 9th inning.

After Clark eclipsed 130 pitches in his first 8 innings, the Mountaineers sent him back out for the 9th inning and clinging to a 6-5 lead. His 134th pitch of the game would not remain in the park with UNC’s Luke Stevenson drilling a game-tying home run to straight away center field.

Clark would remain in the game but was pulled after striking out Johnny Castagnozzi and a single by Alex Madera. West Virginia would then turn to Aidan Major, and he was able to get Colby Wilkerson on a strikeout for the 2nd out of the 9th.

That would bring Vance Honeycutt to the plate, setting the dramatic stage in Chapel Hill. Honeycutt would work the count to 3-1 in his favor, and the rest is history.

He got a 94 mph fastball over the plate, and Honeycutt did not miss it. He drilled it 425 feet into the night, a walk-off 2-run home run that was tracked at 109 mph off the bat.

After trailing since the top of the 6th inning, North Carolina came up with the clutch hits in the 9th inning to move within a win of the College World Series in Omaha. The Tar Heels have 3 last at-bat victories in the NCAA Tournament, including 2 walk-off home runs so far.

The two teams will be back in action Saturday night at 8 pm ET with a broadcast set for ESPN2.
