St. John’s reportedly fired coach Mike Anderson on Friday, 1 day after the Red Storm’s quarterfinal loss to Marquette in the Big East Tournament.

College basketball insider Jeff Goodman was 1st to report the news:

Anderson, a familiar name to SEC basketball fans from his days coaching at Missouri and Arkansas, went 18-15 this season at St. John’s.

He has been a head coach for 21 seasons and has still never finished below .500. Anderson finished his 4-year tenure at St. John’s with a 68-56 record, but he failed to lead the Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament during his tenure.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein has reported that Rick Pitino is expected to be a primary candidate to replace Anderson.

According to Rothstein, St. John’s has spent the past few weeks vetting Pitino’s potential candidacy for the job. Pitino’s name has also been linked to the opening at Georgetown, which fired Patrick Ewing as coach earlier this week.
