SMU made a major commitment to basketball when it joined the ACC in 2024-25 with the hiring of Andy Enfield, who achieved notoriety during tenures at Florida Gulf Coast and Southern Cal, as its new coach. He made an immediate impact by leading the Mustangs to 21 wins and an NIT bid in his first season.

The next step is getting to the NCAA Tournament, a goal they’ve accomplished only twice since 1993. And one of those Tournament appearances in 2015 was tainted by NCAA violations committed by coach Larry Brown. 

The most successful era in program history came from 1947-67 under coach Doc Hayes, whose teams won 8 Southwest Conference championships, reached 6 NCAA Tournaments and played in the Final Four in 1956.
