About South Carolina Basketball
Once one of college basketball’s premier programs, South Carolina has struggled to return to prominence since its glory days of the late 1960s and early 1970s under Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire and its exit from the ACC.
The Gamecocks have enjoyed a few brief periods of success since joining the SEC in 1992, including a run of 4 straight 20-win seasons during which coach Dave Odom took them to an NCAA Tournament before winning back-to-back NIT championships in 2005 and 2006.
South Carolina’s finest hour on the basketball court came in 2017 when coach Frank Martin and SEC Player of the Year Sindarius Thornwell took the Gamecocks on an improbable ride that included their school’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 1973 and an upset of blue-blood Duke on the way to the first Final Four in program history.
The Gamecocks have only been back to the NCAA Tournament once since, in 2024 under current coach Lamont Paris.
