About Virginia Cavaliers Basketball

Virginia basketball is home to Ralph Sampson, a 3-time Naismith Award winner and one of the greatest players in college basketball history.

Sampson and Virginia dominated during the ACC’s golden age, but the Cavaliers also reached the Final Four for the second time the year after he graduated.

In 2019, the Cavaliers broke through and won their first NCAA Tournament title. They did so under Tony Bennett, who eventually Virginia’s all-time wins leader before retiring in 2024 with 364 wins. Bennett passed the legendary Terry Holland, the pioneer who recruited Sampson, won 326 games and built the Cavaliers into an ACC power.
