College football officially returned this weekend. While all eyes were on the Florida State-Georgia Tech clash in Dublin, that was not the only game. In the FCS ranks, fans were treated to quite a finish between McNeese and Tarleton State.

In the first half, Tarleton State jumped out to a 26-7 lead. McNeese, though, did not roll over.

The Cowboys scored 13 points in the 4th quarter to cut the deficit to 26-23. McNeese got the ball one last time at its own 11-yard line with less than 3 minutes to go.

McNeese managed to move the ball 67 yards down the field. A 3rd-down penalty, however, moved the Cowboys back 5 yards. At the 27-yard-line with 10 seconds left, McNeese decided to try for the game-tying field goal.

Tarleton State decided it was time to call on Happy Gilmore. The program turned to the classic 1990s Adam Sandler sports comedy, putting a still from the scene of Abraham Lincoln, Chubbs and an alligator waving on its video board in hopes of distracting kicker Tyler Larco.

The kick went wide. Tarleton State, beginning its first season as FCS playoff eligible after 3 reclassification seasons, held on for a 26-23 victory.

It’s like they always say, you can count on Adam Sandler in the biggest moments.
