Tennessee vs Georgia

Despite both teams being members of the SEC since 1932, Tennessee and Georgia did not face each other all that frequently for much of the 20th century. Tennessee vs. Georgia took place only 21 times prior to 1992. When the Southeastern Conference expanded and created its East and West divisions in 1992, the rivalry turned into an annual event.

The rivalry has many notable games throughout the years. The 2001 game between Georgia and Tennessee is referred to as the Hobnail Boot Game. After Georgia knocked off No. 6 ranked Tennessee with a last second touchdown between quarterback David Greene and Verron Haynes, Georgia radio announcer famously said, “We just stepped on their face with a hobnail boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!”

The first Tennessee-Georgia game took place in Knoxville in 1899 where Tennessee beat Georgia by a score of 5-0.

Georgia has dominated the rivalry for much of the series since 2010, but the longest win streak in the series is Tennessee’s 9-game streak that extended from 1989 to 1999.
