Bo Freakin’ Jackson.
There isn’t an Auburn football discussion that doesn’t include — or usually start with — the greatest running back in program history.
Bo Jackson not only is a Heisman Trophy winner (1985), he’s 1 of only 7 Tigers to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season two times. He also held the Tigers’ single-season rushing record for almost 30 years, too, before giving way to Tre Mason in 2013.
Auburn’s 1,000-Yard Rushers
In 2010, quarterback Cam Newton not only joined Auburn’s list of 1,000-yard rushers, he set the mark for yards by a quarterback. Here is the complete list of every Auburn Tiger player who has rushed for 1,000 yards in a season.
Auburn’s Single-Season Rushing Record Progression
Bo knows records. From 1985-2013, Bo Jackson held Auburn’s single-season rushing record. It took almost 30 years to replace him at the top. Here’s the complete progression of Auburn’s record-holders since 1942, when Monk Gafford became the first Auburn player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season (bold indicates season he broke the record):
Years at No. 1 | Player | Rushing yards |
---|---|---|
2013-present | Tre Mason | 1,816 |
1985-2013 | Bo Jackson | 1,786 |
1980-1985 | James Brooks | 1,314 |
1979-1980 | James Brooks | 1,209 |
1978-1979 | Joe Cribbs | 1,205 |
1963-1978 | Jimmy Sidle | 1,006 |
1942-1963 | Monk Gafford | 1,004 |
