Every 1,000-Yard Rusher in Georgia Football History
By Chris Wright
Last Updated:
Georgia didn’t invent running the football.
But nobody in the country did it better than the 3 seasons the Bulldogs handed off to Herschel Walker.
Walker set the SEC single-season rushing record in 1981 and held it for more than 30 years. The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner remains the conference’s all-time rushing leader with 5,259 yards. The fact he did it in only 3 seasons makes the magic number all the more remarkable.
Georgia’s 1,000-Yard Rushers
Herschel Walker doesn’t just lead the list, he ranks No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 on the list of Georgia’s single-season rushing leaders. The greatest player in Georgia football history, Walker is the only Dawg who topped 1,000 yards three times. Here’s the complete list of every player who rushed for 1,000 yards in Georgia football history.
Georgia’s Single-Season Rushing Record Progression
Herschel Walker wasn’t Georgia’s first 1,000-yard rusher. Kevin McLee was. But McLee didn’t hold the Dawgs’ single-season rushing record for long. Here’s a look at the progression (bold indicates season the record was broken).
Years at No. 1 | Player | Rushing Yards |
---|---|---|
1981-present | Herschel Walker | 1,891 |
1980-1981 | Herschel Walker | 1,616 |
1978-1980 | Willie McClendon | 1,312 |
1976-1978 | Kevin McLee | 1,058 |
