The University of Florida wasted little time in firing head coach Jim McElwain Sunday.

Following a crazy week leading into the blowout loss to Georgia, his firing seemed imminent. Randy Shannon will serve as the team’s interim head coach moving forward. FootballScoop reported the news first.

Florida confirmed the report and released an official statement from AD Scott Stricklin:

“We want to thank Coach McElwain for his efforts in leading the Gator football program. We are confident Coach Shannon will provide the proper guidance to the players and rest of staff during this time and we will begin a national search for the next head coach.”
