Florida didn’t just record an incredible victory in its basketball program’s history on Saturday. It made college basketball history, too.

The 6th-ranked Gators took down No. 1 Auburn, 90-81, on the Tigers’ home court, and that put this particular Florida team in some very unique company in the annals of the sport. Fans might recall that the Gators also took down then-No. 1 Tennessee by a hefty 30 points on Jan. 7 in Gainesville. That means Florida has 2 victories over top-ranked teams in the same season, and that hardly ever happens.

In fact, with Saturday’s victory, Florida became just the fifth team in AP Poll history to have a home win and a road win over AP No. 1 opponents in the same season. But that’s not the whole story. These Gators are the first ever to do it over 2 different opponents, with the Volunteers and the Tigers as the victims. The unique stat is courtesy of ESPNStatsInfo.

The history-making win improved the Gators to 20-3 overall and 7-3 in the rugged SEC, as Todd Golden’s team joined some very elite company with a victory that was the talk of social media among college basketball fans on Saturday.

Florida will try to keep its momentum going on Tuesday night when it stays on the road to face another SEC foe that is ranked in No. 22 Mississippi State.
