National college football writer Matt Hayes sent out quite an interesting tweet on Sunday evening that may shed some light on Jim McElwain’s relationships inside the University of Florida athletic department.
If you haven’t heard by now, McElwain was fired as the Gators head coach on Sunday.
Hayes said he was told by a source that Florida legend — both as a player and coach — Steve Spurrier tried reaching out to McElwain on two separate occasions this season to offer help.
McElwain reportedly told Spurrier, “No thanks.”
If that’s how it really went down, that’s certainly a bad look for McElwain.
It’s understandable that a coach would want to run things his own way, but refusing help from Spurrier? Probably not a good idea. The guy was pretty solid as a head ball coach.
Source told me Spurrier reached out twice to McElwain this fall to offer help, was told no thanks. That alone is fireable offense. #Gators
