Florida named Malik Zaire the starting quarterback when coach Jim McElwain was removed from his position as head coach and replaced with interim coach Randy Shannon.

However, on Saturday, Zaire injured (and then re-injured) his knee in a loss to South Carolina and will be out for a while.

Therefore, it’s back to the drawing board for Shannon and the Gators. On Monday, Shannon said the team would go back to redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks as the starter for this weekend’s game against UAB:

Shannon also added that redshirt junior WR Dre Massey will also get some reps at quarterback this week:

At 3-6, the Gators need to win both of their remaining games to even have a chance at bowl eligibility after a game against Northern Colorado was canceled earlier this year due to a hurricane.

The Gators’ hopes will once again be resting on Franks’s shoulders as the team continues to struggle.
