Steve Spurrier sure sounds disappointed by the latest news but he also notes that if the AAF goes under, his team had the best record during the league’s inaugural season.

If you have missed the news, the AAF has suspended all football operations effective immediately. This news was first reported by Pro Football Talk. While the news is pessimistic, it doesn’t necessarily mean the league is going away for good, but that certainly appears to be close to happening.

Spurrier isn’t the only high-profile former SEC player to react to the news, as Memphis Express quarterback Johnny Manziel has also issued a statement following the news.

Following the news, Spurrier was interviewed by WFTV in Orlando and in classic Spurrier fashion, even though the league is likely to fold at any time, the former Florida and South Carolina coach wants the world to know his team had the best record and deserves to be called the champions of the only AAF season.

“We’re all disappointed but on the other side, we gotta be the champs, right? We were 7-1 and the next teams are 5-3,” Spurrier bragged on Tuesday.

Spurrier expounded on that topic, crediting his players for earning that right by their achievements on the field this season.

“The players had wonderful attitudes, the effort level they have played with has been very rewarding for me and the coaching staff,” Spurrier continued. “We started the season hoping to win the Alliance championship and if they declare a champ, hopefully, these guys will be declared the champs because they are certainly deserving.”
