There are mixed expectations surrounding the Florida Gators heading into the 2023 season after the team fell flat last year, ending the season with a 6-7 overall record (3-5 SEC).

Florida Gators legend Steve Spurrier recently offered his thoughts on how he expects Florida to fare in head coach Billy Napier’s second season there, and said that he expected it to be a good, but not necessarily great year.

Florida moves into the season with several new faces, including Wisconsin transfer quarterback Graham Mertz.

“Graham Mertz, I guess, is our starter right now,” Spurrier said.

But Spurrier sees some quality depth in the other quarterbacks Florida has on the roster, namely Micah Leon, a graduate transfer who spent time at UConn and NC State before heading over to Gainesville. Based on the way Spurrier sees things, there’s a real possibility that Leon could see some action sooner rather than later.

“Every time he’s in there, the ball goes up and down the field in a good way. So, don’t be surprised if Leon plays some here real soon.”

Regardless, multiple factors outside of that one position will heavily affect if Florida is able to bounce back.

“We’ll see. I think (Billy Napier) has got better coaches this year. Sometimes as fans we like to look at who is the quarterback… we had a top-notch quarterback last year and still had a losing record. So, there’s more to football than the quarterback.”
