Brian Kelly has had his share of stellar tight ends during his time in college football. So the LSU head coach is well-equipped to describe the challenge Georgia will face replacing Brock Bowers in the lineup.
The star tight end is out for an indefinite amount of time after sustaining an ankle injury, according to Kirby Smart.
Bowers has caught 41 passes for 567 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. During a recent press conference, Kelly describes what makes Bowers so potent.
“He’s such a unique presence within their offensive structure. Because he can, I mean he threatens you vertically, his size becomes a matchup issue in terms of any ball that’s thrown,” Kelly said. “He has the speed and the toughness to pick up the tough yardage, even if it’s a short screen that requires him to break a tackle or 2. He’s a unique player.”
Kelly explains that Bowers is comparable in skill set to some of his top tight ends from his time as a coach. Kelly believes that Georgia will need to take a committee approach while Bowers is out.
“I’ve had some really good ones along the way. From Kyle Rudolph to Mike Mayer just recently and they all have some different skillsets, Brock has all of them and that is a unique player,” Kelly said.”You won’t replace him, you’ll look to find other ways to make up for the loss of production.”
Georgia is currently on a bye week and will face rival Florida on Oct. 28 (3:30 p.m. EST/CBS).
