Georgia’s plans have been altered by the tragedy in New Orleans that is being investigated as a suspected terror attack.
Early Wednesday morning, 10 people were killed with dozens more injured when a truck plowed into a crowd of pedestrians on Bourbon Street. The area is less than a mile away from the Superdome, the site of the College Football Playoff quarterfinal Sugar Bowl matchup between No. 2 seed Georgia and 7-seed Notre Dame. The game has been postponed 24 hours, receiving a new kickoff time of 8:45 p.m. Thursday.
ESPN reporter Laura Rutledge reported during an appearance on ABC News that the incident led to the Bulldog football team staying put at the team hotel on Wednesday.
“Speaking with Georgia team officials throughout the day, they have been waiting to gather more information,” Rutledge shared. “While that’s been going on, they have a ‘shelter in place’ at their team hotel. They’re on lockdown. Nobody’s leaving. Nobody’s coming in. They’re making sure everybody is as safe as possible.”
Georgia issued multiple statements regarding the Bulldogs in New Orleans. All members of the athletic department travel party to the Sugar Bowl are safe and have been accounted for. UGA President Jere W. Morehead announced that a Georgia student was injured in the attack.
Rutledge added that the Superdome, where she appeared for her report, had only recently opened after another security sweep.
