Georgia on upset alert? Bulldogs trailing Georgia Tech by multiple scores at the half
Georgia’s grip on a College Football Playoff berth may be loosening.
The Bulldogs are trailing rival Georgia Tech at the half on Friday night in Athens. The Yellow Jackets took a 17-0 lead into the break after dominating the time-of-possession battle in the first half.
Georgia Tech had 5 full drives in the first half. Each lasted at least 7 plays and the first 4 took at least 3:57 off the clock. The Yellow Jackets were a bit wasteful with their opportunities though, as one of those drives ended in a turnover-on-downs while another netted a missed field goal.
Georgia Tech’s final offensive possession of the half came after a UGA fumble. The Yellow Jackets scored its final touchdown of the half at the end of an 11-play drive that took 2:30 off the clock.
For Georgia, this is the first time the Bulldogs have been shutout in the first half of a game since 2019 against Kentucky (UGA ultimately won 21-0). It’s only the 5th time it’s happened in the entire Kirby Smart era.
A loss would have a significant impact on conference championship game weekend. Georgia has already clinched a spot in the SEC Championship Game, but it would likely need to win that game in order to earn a berth into the CFP if it doesn’t pull off a second-half comeback against Georgia Tech.
Here’s some of the best of the reaction to Georgia Tech’s big first half in Athens:
It’s probably time to ask….What would Georgia’s record be if they had to face an ACC schedule??

Georgia may win an SEC title but can’t physically dominate a mid-pack ACC team. Greg Sankey should probably keep his mouth shut this week.

Per @ESPNStatsInfo … This is the first time Georgia has allowed 100 pass yards and 100 rush yards in any half of a home game since 2014 vs Clemson

If Georgia loses this game — or even if it doesn't — we need to stop saying the SEC is just better than everyone else. There is no gifting them extra spots because it is the SEC. That's not what the results say.

When Georgia plays to its full capability it can beat anybody in the country by two scores. The problem is Georgia has only played to its full capability for like six quarters this year.

Wow Georgia Tech must be incredible they’re beating SEC giant Georgia

It would appear there is a significant gap between the hypothetical Georgia team their fans and media spent weeks telling us would crush Indiana and the actual Georgia team that shows up on the field

Georgia Tech has done a great job this year. My regard for Brent Key can’t be any higher. But if we are supposed to believe the SEC deserves to get all the playoff spots, this game is a reality check. https://t.co/WEKSj2bet2

Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin are about to start campaigning for Georgia Tech to be No. 1 in the CFP rankings on Tuesday.
