Greg McElroy gives key trends, prediction for Tennessee-Georgia game

Greg McElroy likes Georgia in Saturday’s showdown in Sanford Stadium against the visiting Tennessee Volunteers, but he does not see the Bulldogs covering the spread. And it is reasonable to see why, considering the Bulldogs hardly have the best track record against it this season.

As a matter of fact, Georgia is one of the worst teams in all of college football against the spread in 2024. For betting purposes, it is smart to favor Tennessee here, though not outright in the analyst’s eyes.

“Georgia is 1-7 against the spread as a favorite this year, that’s the 2nd-worst in FBS this year. Arizona is 0-5, they’re the only one that’s worse,” he said. “Tennessee is 3-0 ATS against ranked teams this season, 2nd-best in the FBS… Georgia, however, is 5-0 ATS against Tennessee since 2019.”

One of Georgia’s biggest issues this season has been a slow start and leaving too many points on the table. Such has been the case since the first game of the year against the Clemson Tigers.

“Too many points given up, way too many points… I think Tennessee’s defense is going to completely hold this Georgia offense in check,” McElroy continued. “I think this thing is going to look a lot more like the Kentucky game… I’ll take Georgia but it’s purely because of desperation.”

Regardless of how close this contest is, who covers the spread, and things of this nature, there is no question this will be one of the biggest games of the season where College Football Playoff implications are concerned with Tennessee ranked at No. 7 and Georgia ranked at No. 12 currently.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET in Sanford Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 16.
