Kirby Smart calls out Georgia fans for ‘a lack of really affecting the game’

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs bounced back from a narrow loss at Alabama in Week 5 by taking down rival Auburn 31-13 at Sanford Stadium in Week 6.

It was a hot day in Athens, but Smart doesn’t handle excuses from his team well and he’s not going to let fans make excuses, either.

Per 247Sports, Smart was critical of the effort from Georgia fans on Saturday, expressing disappointment during his postgame interview with Fox 5:

“I tell you what, it was hot out there today, Shock, and if anything to be honest I’m a little disappointed. I’m probably disappointed in our fans for the first time that I thought there was, you know, a lack of really affecting the game crowd noise-wise, passion and energy,” Smart told Fox 5’s DJ Shockley. “Hey, it was hot, but our players have got full pads on, helmets, pads, and it’s hot out there and they’re pushing and trying to have a home-field advantage like we’ve had when we’ve played against teams and I can’t get crowd noise, you know?

“That’s frustrating for me, so I’ll just be honest about it that I think we need to do a better job as fans, and I know I’ve got to do a better job as a coach, but we need these fans to support us and these players need them behind them.”

Georgia hosts the SEC’s other Bulldogs, Mississippi State, in Week 7. Will we see fans respond to Smart’s challenge? We’ll find out on Saturday.
