Kirby Smart gave a little bit more information on Carson Beck’s injury on Sunday following the College Football Playoff rankings reveal in which Georgia was named the No. 2 seed. That first-round bye could come in handy with little known about the significance of Beck’s injury.
“I’m still trying to get that analysis myself. He did have an MRI this morning, we should get the results in the next few hours,” Smart said during an ESPN interview. “We just had a team meeting, he was there for the team meeting. We don’t know much more than we knew last night as of right now, but we should be finding something out here soon.”
While things are still unclear, there was perhaps some reason for optimism based on what Smart said in his postgame press conference following the 22-19 overtime win over the Texas Longhorns. The coach had said it “looked okay” but there is still so much uncertainty surrounding the situation.
“Basically, we looked at it in (the locker room) and it looked okay, but he couldn’t have the grip strength to throw the ball… We need to find out exactly what’s going on, do an MRI and look into it,” said Smart.
Smart met with the Georgia media exclusively on Sunday afternoon and was asked about the impact of losing Beck and indefinitely moving forward with backup quarterback Gunner Stockton in the interim.
“There’s no good script for losing a quarterback or having to go to your backup quarterback… this situation does give you time if that’s what has to happen,” Smart said.
He added that experience is valuable and that he wishes Stockton had gotten more in-game reps before this happened. Smart said he expected the MRI results to come back within a few hours early on Sunday afternoon, so it seems that there should be more known by the end of the day.
For now, all that is known is that Beck’s injury is related to the elbow area after it was previously not specified where exactly he was injured.
