Kirby Smart describes simple thought process behind deciding starting RT

Kirby Smart had a decision to make when it came to who would start at right tackle.

With Amarius Mims making a return from a tight rope surgery earlier this season, Smart is gearing up for his return. That means deciding between Mims, Xavier Truss and Monroe Freeling at the starting right tackle position.

For him, the solution is simple: start the player who gives you the best chance of winning the game.

“The person who can play the best and function the best and give us the best chance to win,” Smart said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “It’s the same answer: The one who gives us the best chance to win. It’s just the same as the quarterback and it’s just the same as the running backs and DBs who played. The guys who give us the best chance to be successful.”

Mims is a veteran for the Bulldogs in his 3rd year at Georgia, but his veteran status and chemistry with the offensive line isn’t a factor for Smart.

“Chemistry, I mean (Mims has) been part of our program for 3 years and he’s played with the offensive line, those same guys, last year a ton,” Smart said. “Started him last year. He’s played a lot this year, he’s moved around. He’s played left and right. They move around, are moving parts. Chemistry is not a factor in this decision. It’s who gives us the best chance to win.”

Georgia is looking for a big game from its offensive line this Saturday as the Bulldogs take on Florida in Jacksonville. The Gators are clicking at the right time and are gunning for an upset over Georgia, so the Bulldogs can’t afford any lapses, especially on the offensive line.
