Kirby Smart gives injury updates, rules one player out for season opener

With the season opener only five days away, Georgia coach Kirby Smart updated the status of several injured players during his press conference on Monday.

Smart said that junior defensive back Tyrique McGhee will not play in Saturday’s season opener against Austin Peay. McGhee has a broken bone in his foot, which he sustained during the team’s first scrimmage.

“Tyrique is running now, underwater, non-weight bearing running,” Smart said. “We’re hopeful to get him back for South Carolina [on Sept. 8], but he won’t be able to play this game.”

Senior wide receiver Terry Godwin is questionable for the opener. Godwin has a minor left MCL injury that he has been dealing with since the start of spring drills.

“We don’t know if Terry will be back, hope to get Terry back,” Smart said.

Freshman wide receivers Jayson Stanley (quadriceps injury) and Kearis Jackson (hamstring injury) are both more likely to play.

“We think they’ll be able to go more,” Smart said.

The Bulldogs open their season against Austin Peay on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
