Kirby Smart can’t be a happy man right now.
A week after flashing an explosive offense, Georgia leads FCS foe Nicholls State just 10-7 at halftime. The Colonels are out-rushing the Bulldogs 83-75, and Heisman contender Nick Chubb has just 17 yards on nine carries.
“Well, they stopped the run. Real simple,” Smart told SEC Network’s Olivia Harlan at halftime. “They’re whipping us up front, they’re doing a better job than we are up front, competing, knocking us back with the offensive line. We’re not running real downhill and powerful. We have no identity on offense right now. So they’re just playing better than we are right now.”
Nicholls State pulled to within three points on a 30-yard drive after Chubb fumbled late in the second quarter.
“The big thing is change of pace. We’ve got to do a much better job when we have a turnover of going out and stopping them,” Smart said. “We didn’t do that. The defense played pretty good for the first part of the half, and then we let our offense down letting them score a touchdown there late.”
Georgia was considered a 50-point favorite against Nicholls by many oddsmakers, but the Bulldogs fell well short of that mark in the first half.
