It pays to be Matt Stafford: Former UGA QB set to receive $500,000 offseason workout bonus from Lions
Matt Stafford continues to be one of the NFL’s most well-compensated players.
The latest example of this comes from the former Georgia quarterback’s current contract. After re-signing with the Lions and agreeing to a five-year deal worth $135 million to stay in Detroit, the quarterback is set to receive a $500,000 workout bonus this offseason. This figure comes via to the Detroit Free Press.
Offseason workout bonuses are nothing new but the figure of Stafford’s offseason bonus is exorbitant, especially when you take into consideration that he made $6,450 in total workout bonuses during the previous offseason.
When Stafford agreed to his new contract last August, he became the NFL’s highest-paid player at the time. The deal came with a $50 million signing bonus and could be worth up to $92 million in guarantees by the time it ends. Stafford was also given a six-year deal worth over $40 million as a rookie back in 2009.
Moral of the story? It pays to be Matt Stafford.
