Kentucky crushed Oregon State 10-0 on Saturday, earning a 1-0 series advantage in dominant fashion. Trey Pooser threw 7 shutout innings as he continues to prove himself as one of the best starting pitchers remaining in the fielder. On the other side, Kentucky managed 3 runs in 5 innings against Oregon State ace Aiden May. The Wildcats then dominated Oregon State’s bullpen, scoring 7 runs over the final 4 frames of the contest.
Entering the series, Kentucky was just a slight favorite (-136) at FanDuel despite being the No. 2 national seed. There were even public projection models and power ratings that favored Oregon State in this matchup. The Beavers had an impressive regular season, but did play a significantly-weaker schedule than what Kentucky had to endure in the SEC.
Here’s a look at the projected pitching matchups for Game 2:
Kentucky vs. Oregon State probable pitching matchups
Kentucky probable pitcher: Mason Moore: 5.02 ERA in 84.1 innings | 76 strikeouts | 45 walks
Mason Moore is expected to get the nod for Kentucky on Sunday evening. Moore’s ERA is north of 5 on the year, but that is inflated after he went through a rough 3-start stretch in April in-which he allowed 19 earned runs over 12 innings to Auburn, Tennessee and South Carolina. Moore is coming off of an excellent start against Indiana State last weekend: 6 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Kentucky also has a well-rested bullpen entering this game. Because Pooser was able to go 7 strong innings on Saturday, the Wildcats only had to use 1 other pitcher to secure the Game 1 win. That was Jackson Nove, who threw the final 2 innings of Game 1. Other than Nove, everyone else in Kentucky’s bullpen should be fully rested for Sunday.
Oregon State’s lineup is more formidable than it showed on Saturday vs. Pooser. The Beavers are led by Travis Bazzana, who is expected to be a top-2 pick in this summer’s MLB Draft. Bazzana entered this weekend with a .415 batting average and a 1.512 OPS, so it would be surprising if he’s absent from the stat sheet for a second straight day. He went 0-for-3 with a walk on Saturday. As a team, the Beavers managed just 1 hit and 4 walks — they’ll need to create a lot more traffic on the basepaths against Moore to have a chance.

Oregon State probable pitcher: Jacob Kmatz: 3.29 ERA in 82 innings | 88 strikeouts | 20 walks
Oregon State’s strength is in its starting rotation, and that should continue on Sunday with Jacob Kmatz expected to be on the bump. Kmatz has been excellent this season and also gets batters to swing-and-miss at good rate. Kmatz has allowed just 2 earned runs over his last 13 innings against UCLA and UC Irvine.
Kentucky’s lineup was dominant on Saturday, but most of the damage came against Oregon State’s bullpen. The Wildcats roughed up Joey Mundt, AJ Hutcherson and Noah Ferguson to the tune of 7 earned runs over just 1.1 innings. Mundt is the only one of that trio who has been heavily relied-upon this season, and he threw just 29 pitches before exiting the game, so he could be called upon again in this series. Oregon State’s other top bullpen arms should be available for Sunday.
Eight of the 9 players in Kentucky’s starting lineup scored a run on Saturday. Ironically, the only exception was leadoff hitter and star outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt. Ryan Nicholson more than picked up the slack, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and 1 home run. This remains a dangerous Kentucky lineup going into Game 2.
First pitch in Lexington is set for 9 p.m. ET on Sunday night.
