A video of Kentucky point guard Ashton Hagans showing off a large amount of cash is making the rounds on social media.
The screen-recording of a Snapchat video was widely shared Sunday on Twitter. The Snapchat post has a short video of Hagans showing off a stack of bills. The video is captioned “Make sure you keep you a little something in ya shoeboxxx nobody can touch!!” and tagged as being recorded in Lexington.
I guess UK’s Ashton Hagans has been hanging on to his ‘Cost of Attendance’ stipend? pic.twitter.com/8I8saNMS8r

Kentucky has not widely released a statement on the matter, but spokesmen have addressed at least one reporter’s inquiries. Tim Sullivan of the Courier-Journal shared Sunday that he was told by a Wildcats team spokesman that the video is dated and that the “red flag” has already been addressed by UK. Sullivan further clarified Monday that, “Kentucky spokesman says Ashton Hagans’ showing-us-the-money video is ‘not recent or even the last few months.'”
Kentucky spokesman says Ashton Hagans’ showing-us-the-money video is “not recent or even the last few months.” If Hagans has offered an explanation, I have not heard it. https://t.co/nh2C2kDhZh

Wildcats insider Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio tweeted on Sunday that the video was “posted a couple of weeks ago” and only found by “(Louisville) media” over the weekend. Hagans did not make the trip to Gainesville, Florida, for Kentucky’s regular-season finale against UF due to “personal reasons.” While some have speculated his absence could be related to the video, Jason Marcum of A Sea of Blue writes that the fact that Hagans played recently against Auburn and Tennessee indicates that UK is not concerned about any violation or eligibility issues related to the money in the video.
Controversy over the video is unlikely to blow over any time soon, however, as Clay Travis shared the video with his audience of over 650,000 followers on Monday.
The argument most top players in college basketball aren’t already getting paid is crazy. Here’s Kentucky’s Ashton Hagans. Maybe this is why he really missed the Florida game. pic.twitter.com/RFB7bT51bC
