Brian Kelly was caught on camera being the fiery, red-faced head coach that everybody knows him to be.

During Saturday night’s 44-21 victory over Nicholls in LSU’s home opener, Kelly expressed his frustration to kicker Damian Ramos, grabbing his jersey after a Colonels player was able to get a finger on one attempt and make it go wide-right.

One could’ve assumed Kelly was upset that Ramos missed the kick, but that person wouldn’t be right. Kelly has since explained exactly why he was upset with his junior kicker.

“I wasn’t upset about missing the field goal,” Kelly explained about the missed 39-yarder on the final play of the 1st half. “I was upset about the process. I had just explained what the process was, and the referee went over and explained it to Damian and confused him. Essentially said, ‘Listen to the head coach.’ I’ve been doing this a long time.”

Ramos is a redshirt junior who came to LSU in 2021 and by the following season he was the team’s full-time kicker. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2022 and for his career he’s made 75% of his field goal attempts and 98.6% of his extra points. That includes making all 8 extra point attempts and 2 out of 3 field goals in the first 2 games of the 2024 season.

Kelly also explained that his issue was the operation time taking too long, which could’ve been the reason the kick was blocked.

“He got confused about the process,” Kelly said.

The missed field goal ended up being the only opportunity Ramos had to kick a field goal in the game. So, there wasn’t an opportunity for him to clean up that process.

“He’ll listen to me in the future,” Kelly said.

Ramos’ next shot at getting it right could come Saturday in the Tigers’ SEC opener at South Carolina.
