Ed Orgeron being compared to former SEC head coach after LSU loss
By Adam Spencer
Published:
Ed Orgeron led the LSU Tigers to a perfect 15-0 record and a national championship in 2019 with QB Joe Burrow winning the Heisman Trophy along the way.
However, in 2020, the Tigers regressed, finishing a disappointing 5-5 on the year. Now, they’re 0-1 in 2021 after losing at UCLA on Saturday night.
Let’s just say the honeymoon is over for Coach O after the 2019 title. In fact, many fans took to Twitter after the loss to compare him to former Auburn coach Gene Chizik, who won the 2010 title with Cam Newton and was fired after going 3-9 in 2012.
Below, you can see some of the myriad responses on Twitter comparing Coach O to the former Auburn coach:
Looking more and more like Joe Burrow and Ed Orgeron are Cam Newton and Gene Chizik 2.0. A quarterback having an all time legendary college football season elevates an otherwise good but not great team to excellence. Mediocrity quickly returns. A coach firing follows.

Was Joe Burrow to Ed Orgeron, what Cam Newton was to Gene Chizik?
Or is it too ealry for that conversation?? #LSU

Seems inevitable. LSU is going to chizik Orgeron this year. https://t.co/SMVYPsi0PP

Ed Orgeron is Gene Chizik.
One magical run with an all-time college QB that won the Heisman.
Around .500 the rest of their careers.
Orgeron is a funny character and easy to root for, but he was never a great coach. Carried by an elite OC and legendary QB performance.

LSU's defense remains such a dumpster fire that I genuinely believe Ed Orgeron is on a Gene Chizik-style exit trajectory

Everything Bama fans said about Orgeron and LSU was true
He’s Gene Chizik
2019 was a one hit wonder

Getting 2011-12 Gene Chizik vibes from Orgeron. LSU is too damn talented to be this bad and undisciplined on defense.

Ed Orgeron is Gene Chizik 2.0 confirmed

Poor Gene Chizik. All he’s doing is working for the SEC Network as an analyst and doing a heck of a job at it.
We’ll see if Orgeron can turn things around as the Tigers return home to Baton Rouge this week to host McNeese.
