The perception of the LSU football program outside of Baton Rouge wasn’t great heading into training camp and it didn’t take long for things to go haywire in a hurry this August.

Beginning with the arrest and suspension of starting offensive lineman Ed Ingram, which occurred following allegations of aggravated sexual assault against a minor, the arrest and suspension of linebacker Tyler Taylor following his alleged involvement in felony theft of handguns over the summer, the arrest and suspension of receiver Drake Davis, who is accused of beating a woman, the transfers of quarterbacks Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillan from the program and the rejection and finally overturned suspension status of cornerback Kristian Fulton.

Keep in mind all that is going on while the Tigers are in the midst of training camp which includes a heated competition at the starting quarterback spot.

Following all that activity, many coaches would understandably feel burdened — especially when their jobs may already be on the line. Not Ed Orgeron, at least not publicly, as Coach O claims all that noise has brought his program closer together.

How did he come to that conclusion? Here’s what Orgeron said recently when asked what he’s learned over the last month during a difficult training camp.

“That I’m prepared. I love being at LSU,” Orgeron said. “Every day has been a great day, some are better than others. Stuff is going to happen and we deal with it and we have dealt with it.

“I think all this stuff that has happened galvanized our football team. It’s galvanized our coaching staff, kinda got us closer brought some leadership out, got to make some decisions and I feel good about this football team.”

All that momentum will either continue on Sunday, Sept. 2 with a big win over Miami or the negativity will be compounded with a loss. If Coach O thought things were tough this month, there’s no telling the heat he’ll be feeling to start September if the Tigers start the season off with an embarrassing loss to the Hurricanes.
