Odell Beckham Jr. grew up in Baton Rouge and decided to stay home and attend LSU for college, where he became a star.
Now playing on Sundays with the New York Giants, the former Tiger is one of the best receivers in the NFL.
However, while in Arizona to watch Monday’s NCAA title game, which North Carolina won 71-65 over Gonzaga, Beckham said he always wanted to go to North Carolina to play basketball when he was growing up.
He told Newsday.com that if the Tar Heels had offered him a basketball scholarship, he would have gone to Chapel Hill:
“Ever since I was growing up,” he said of his appreciation for the powder blue, “I said the only way I was going to play basketball was if I went to this school. I never got the offer. I told Coach Roy that yesterday when I met him.”
Though OBJ clearly made the right choice by sticking with football, he appreciates what coach Roy Williams and the Tar Heels do on the basketball court. He congratulated the victors on their championship moment and only had one regret about Monday night:
“I just know it’s a very special moment,” he said. “I wish I had caught it on video.”
Beckham will miss out on the Giants’ upcoming optional workouts (at Duke, no less) while he undergoes an oral surgery, but will be ready to go when official workouts begin later this month.
Then, inspired by the Tar Heels’ title run, he’ll get to work trying to create one of those moments for himself this fall.
