The buzz on Joe Burrow: What Tim Tebow, LSU AD, Ohio State players have said about Tigers starting QB

For the second time in as many seasons, LSU’s starting quarterback will be a transfer from the Big Ten. Last year it was Danny Etling, a Purdue transfer. This time, it’s Joe Burrow, the star of Ohio State’s spring game who decided he wanted to leave the Buckeyes for a chance to start elsewhere.

Burrow’s start is a rarity in Tigers history.

Burrow’s transfer to LSU and campaign to win the starting job kept the SDS news desk busy this offseason as seemingly everyone had something to say about the Tigers signal-caller. Here’s a sampling of some of the buzz on Burrow.

SDS News: Tim Tebow has seen ‘ups and downs’ from Joe Burrow, but believes LSU can have surprising year

“I’ve seen ups and downs. I think there’s been highs and lows,” Tebow said on “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Friday. “There’s been parts of it where you looked at him and you said, ‘This is a guy that has some talent, he has a little moxie. He’s kind of tough, kind of athletic.’ And then there’s also, you know, you weren’t sure. Maybe he wasn’t as consistent at practice when you talked to coaches that had seen him for years.”

But Tebow believes that Burrow has a chance to be “the first successful quarterback at LSU since maybe Matt Flynn.”

And if Burrow gets even more comfortable in the Tigers’ offense, then Tebow believes there could be great things coming for LSU fans.

“I think LSU could shock some people this year,” Tebow said. “I really do.”

SDS senior columnist Connor O’Gara I’m high on LSU QB Joe Burrow, but I’m not high on his Week 1 outlook vs. Miami

Here’s a take that’s actually worth listening to — it’s OK to think that Burrow will struggle in the opener, while also thinking he’ll turn out to be a pretty good quarterback.

This won’t be an ideal way for Burrow to kick things off at LSU. Someone who arrived on campus this summer will open his career as the only college game on national television against a defense that led all Power 5 teams in takeaways last year. There’s a reason we saw (the turnover chain) so much in 2017: Miami returns 70 percent of its defensive production from its burst-onto-the-scene 2017 squad. That includes the likes of preseason All-American safety Jaquan Jackson, as well as a pair of preseason All-ACC picks in cornerback Michael Jackson and linebacker Shaquille Quarterman.

It’s because of that defensive foundation that Miami will begin the 2018 season as the No. 8 team in the Associated Press Top 25, and the overwhelming favorite to win the ACC Coastal Division.

SDS News: LSU AD Joe Alleva excited to see Joe Burrow in action, says he’s going to be ‘an outstanding QB’

After Burrow was named the starter for the Miami game, AD Joe Alleva shared his thoughts with a local paper.

“I think Joe Burrow is going to be an outstanding quarterback,” said Alleva, who played quarterback at Lehigh University in 1975. “But I’ll tell you this, Myles Brennan is not far behind. Myles has got a rocket for an arm. Joe runs a little bit better.”

SDS News: Ohio State players show unbridled excitement for Joe Burrow winning LSU QB job

Soon after Burrow was named the starter, several of his former Ohio State teammates showed genuine excitement and happiness for him. And pointed out that they long ago believed he would be successful.
